Who we are

Jijiga News takes its name from Jijiga, a city at the crossroads of the Horn of Africa. Like the city, we sit where local life, regional politics and global forces meet, and we report on all three.

We exist because readers in East Africa deserve journalism that understands their region from the inside, and because the rest of the world deserves a clearer, fairer picture of Africa than it usually receives.

Our mission

Our mission is to inform, explain and hold power to account. We report what happened, explain why it matters, and give our readers the context they need to understand events and make their own judgements. We aim to be the most trusted source of news on East Africa and the Horn of Africa, and a respected voice on African and world affairs.

What we cover

East Africa and the Horn of Africa. Our core coverage: Ethiopia, Somalia, Somaliland, Djibouti, Eritrea, Kenya, Sudan, South Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania and the wider region, from governance and security to trade, displacement, drought and development.

Africa. The politics, economies, elections, conflicts and innovations shaping the continent and its 1.4 billion people.

The world. Global news from the Middle East, Europe, Asia and the Americas, with particular attention to how international events affect Africa, and how Africa shapes the world.

Across every region we report on politics, business, technology, climate, health and culture.

Our standards

Every story we publish is held to the same principles:

  • Accuracy. We verify information before we publish it and tell readers where it came from.
  • Fairness. We seek the views of those our reporting concerns and present competing perspectives honestly.
  • Independence. Our editorial decisions are made by our journalists and editors, free from political, governmental or commercial influence.
  • Accountability. When we get something wrong, we correct it promptly and openly.

Every story is written and checked by our journalists and approved by an editor before publication. Read more in our editorial standards and corrections policy.
